Murano

Because of fires, in 1291 Venice moved its glass industry to the nearby merchant city island of Murano. As an active trade port, Murano glassmaking today reflects Roman, Asian and Muslim influences. We enjoyed the more laid-back, artisan sister city to Venice.

We languished in the Museo Ventrario in Murano's Palazoo Giustinian. There, we found rooms and rooms of remarkably fancy and colorful old glass.
