Verona is Italy's most romantic city. Here, two gentlewomen explore the open market.
Claire and Pat at the gateway to the small garden below Juliet's famous balcony. Although Shakespeare probably never visited Verona, Romeo and Juliet apparently is founded in lore if not fact. The gateway and tunnel to the garden is painted with thousands and thousands of proclamations of love. What did I write?
Claire is pictured with a bronze statue of the infamous Juliet. Legend has it that if a man rubs Juliet's right breast, he will receive mucho good luck. Hmmmm. Oh, lucky me.
Upscale shopping in Verona.
In addition to bakeries, Claire examines every butcher shop, salami store, cheese stand, local fruit and vegetable stand, well every non-chain store outlet for food that needs to be evaluated for quality, cleanliness and local authenticity. This salami shop score two Claire thumbs up.
All the world is a stage. All the people are players.
Arena di Verona. The Verona arena amphitheatre is world famous for housing grand operas. Originally constructed 2000 years ago, the arena was severely damaged during an earthquake 900 year ago. The facade never was completely restored, but the arena is still used.
The arena is partially retrofitted with modern seating. The operas held there today perform to crowds of 15,000.
